For Enterprise, the Opportunity to Seize BYOD's True Big Data Potential

Thanks to both increasing user demand for Bringing your own Devices(BYOD) programs and growing confidence in enterprise solutions, BYOD has become one of the leading mobile trends of the past five years. And yet, if companies hope to meet demand—and to capitalize on the future potential of big data and a diversified BYOD application ecosystem—they woud be well served to start planning their strategy now. Nothing less than their competitiveness hangs in the balance.

“Enabling BYOD with big data can increase employee productivity and performance potential”

From ‘Just Email’ to Big Data Solutions

As a concept, BYOD has come a long way in a short time. What began with the careful integration of enterprise email, calendar, and mobile contacts onto employee devices now has the potential to become something much more valuable to employers: a working mobile office with connection to databases that, in the past, would have only been available at a desk in the office.

Enabling BYOD with big data can increase employee productivity and performance potential.

Consider engineers working on-site, anywhere from an oil rig to a distant research station. Previously, employees in these roles would be limited to what they can carry with them. Soon, however, an engineer may be able to access the entire big data infrastructure of the enterprise, pushed to a mobile device from the cloud.

Despite this potential, right now the average enterprise is only scraping the surface when it comes to enabling employee mobile devices with mobile applications that provide access to big data. To compete in the coming years, enterprises will need to provide precise functionality and task-specific applications that work seamlessly with incoming big data and analytics.

And with major data advances on the horizon, from the increasing capacity of cloud computing to the Internet of Things, smart enterprises are seizing the opportunity of available and on the go big data to chart a forward-looking strategy. By doing so, they’re able to capitalize on the promise of big data: increased productivity and performance potential.

Key Partnerships and a Savvy App Ecosystem

Big data is revolutionizing the solutions we create for our customers, and enabling fast decision making at your fingertips.

We’re also taking advantage of big data integration for our own employees, who work on multiple

continents—at factories, offices, laboratories, and everywhere in between. Our data centers handle incredibly sensitive trade information, and the amount of incoming and outgoing data we handle and analyze is massive.

We started by developing the right partnerships with cloud services, such as our alliance with Red Hat, to create a bridge between employee smartphones and existing enterprise data infrastructure. We also built the kind of applications required to ensure our end-users can access and manage the data they need in a fast and seamless way. For example, executives can access inventory, sales metrics, and market analysis with just a click of a button, wherever their travels might take them.

    Building Your Own Strategy

To capitalize on the benefits of big data, you might consider a few key questions:

    • What will your end-users need in order to perform as well or even better from their mobile devices than they do from a desktop or through a manual paper process? • What vendors and key partners will you need to bring into your enterprise environment? Who needs to be brought into the cloud, and who needs direct access to on-premises data systems? • How can you build the needed capacity to deliver applications solutions that your end-user community will need as BYOD capacity expands?

For our part, Samsung can be a partner to many enterprises looking to plan and deliver their BYOD and big data strategy. Not only do we have innovative hardware, but also offer the services to help plan, build and deploy the enterprise mobility strategy to help corporations enable their employees with the crucial tools they need.

The bottom line is, mobile access to big data has the potential to change the way employees work and the way businesses operate. Tomorrow’s office won’t look much like today’s office. In fact, in all likelihood we’ll be carrying it in our pockets.

Enterprises won’t have to adapt to this shift overnight, but smart planning today will make for a smoother transition to the mobile office of tomorrow.
